Not sure what's up with the low reviews here. I chose this spot based on the recommendation of a friend, and was glad I did. I ordered the Pork Intestines with Chef's Sauce, and enjoyed it very much. I also tried the Spicy Cucumber appetizer, and was pleased with it as well (but it was more sweet than spicy). Our server was super attentive and polite. I will be back.

It's a monster portion of a fried up mess as you've ever seen; and it's the color of shocking-yellow not found in nature.Next time I'm in the mood for a day-glo platter of goo that I'll be able to taste for the rest of the night, I'll make sure keep Chinatown Gardens in mind.

I've been here four times now--the first time with family, once with my girlfriend, and twice by myself. Its become a nostalgic tradition for me to come to the garden but, honestly, that's probably the only reason that I keep returning. The food is decent but it feels like any other Chinese place I've been outside of a Chinatown--cheesy jazz music, General Tso's at the top of the list, etc. Thought it is a bit pricier--probably just par for DC.Anyway, my real beef for this place is their inattentive service. I always--I mean *always*--have to ask to have my glass refilled. In those rare moments when my server actually checks on me, they don't even ask if I'd like more of whatever I'm drinking. To be fair, however, there is plenty of tea provided.Still, I keep putting-up with it for some reason so there must be some reason to check this place out--if for nothing else, to freak-out your friend by ordering the pork intestines and sour cabbage from the "authentic" section of the menu. ;-)

After failing to navigate to our original destination point (Sticky Rice in SE) for dinner one night, My friends and I gave into our growling stomachs and entered the lavishly decorated exterior of Chinatown Garden.Upon entering the restaurant, I knew it was going to be a boring meal. The customers were all tourists who also were tricked by the beautiful decor of the outside. The inside was what looked like a renovated old office building with unappealing lighting, carpeted floors and cork ceilings. As if they only changed the furniture from cubicles to tables to remodel it into a restaurant. The service was so-so.The DC dinner prices did not match with the low quality chinese food you could purchase anywhere. I felt like I was being scammed. I wanted to tell all the tourists to get out of there and experience real DC cuisine. At least go to Full Kee or take a bus to Toki Underground. Oh, the poor tourists...In the end, 2 stars--the food was edible.

Gosh, am I missing something here? Why all the mediocre reviews? After eating at all the really awful Chinese places here in the Maryland suburbs (and prior in the VA suburbs), this was a welcome change! The Singapore rice noodles and home style bean curd had just the right spice- very flavorful! The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was clean and inviting.I'll be excited to try some other places in Chinatown-I just can't eat Chinese food outside of Chinatown now... While Chinatown Garden offers decent food, there is nothing that really separates it from other DC Chinatown restaurants. The menu is extensive so there is sure to be something for everyone. I came here to nurse a New Years Eve hangover and opted for the spicy Chinatown Garden soup... the broth was good and the noodles were delicious. It would have benefited from a few extra vegetables, but I would definitely order it again. My boyfriend ordered the seafood noodle soup bowl. The broth in his dish was a little bland, which was remedied by taking a few spoonfuls of broth from my dish and mixing it into his. We shared springrolls which were average. The decor in the restaurant is typical for the area, but there are white cloth tablecloths and plenty of seating by the windows. Service is friendly and fast. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but I would definitely visit again if already in the area.

I used to love eating at Chinatown Garden because of their vegetarian options. Over the last few years I've become disappointed in each visit. We dined there yesterday for my birthday lunch. The food was ok but not great. It seems very unprofessional for the staff to stand around in the front when not busy. In fact, a busboy was talking negative about someone. I was not sure if he was talking about an employee, a customer, or someone else but it did not make me comfortable. Our forks did not match and in fact mine was a serving fork, not a dining one. We received the check before we finished eating which I find rude especially when they only had a few customers. It also seems a bit expensive for a vegtarian entree at the cost of $11+. The rolls are obviously pre-made and full of grease. We still tipped 20% but will not be going back again. There are so many great places to eat in DC with great vegan options, we don't have to settle.

The shrimp fried rice and seafood soup was very good. Fresh veg's in the rice, LOTS of shrimp in there and real crab in the soup. A nice finishing touch to the meal was fresh/sweet oranges and cookies. I didn't give it a 4 star only because I reserve that for drop dead amazing. This restaurant is very good and so are the prices. I would love to go again and would recommend it highly.

We were in town to attend an event at the Verizon Center, so we decided to eat somewhere in Chinatown beforehand. Although we were planning on going to another restaurant that I knew of, the day we went coincided with the Chinese New Year parade. As a result, we ended up in this restaurant. The service is pretty good, and they try to bring the food really fast, even though the restaurant was full.BEWARE. the food tastes alright, but my boyfriend had a stomachache and digestion problems for 2 days straight after we ate there. I'm not sure if it was just because that day it was ridiculously crowded and the chefs were rushed, but I'd personally would wait in line and eat somewhere else like Tony Cheng's (across the street) next time.

Well I picked this place largely because of its proximity to the Metro station and its appealing exterior. The service was both prompt and efficient, albeit somewhat disinterested. Paper napkins and glass-topped tables. Parents with children in tow will be comfortable here, as many families were present. The hot and sour soup and Szechuan Chicken were both kind of bland and quite mediocre. All being said: Edible Chinese with moderate prices. No standouts here. 2 stars.

I share the same sentiments as many of the other reviewers on here. I haven't written a Yelp review before, but for some reason this experience prompted me to.Yesterday evening myself and 5 others came into Chinatown Garden. I've been to most of the other Chinese restaurants on this strip, from Full Kee to Mings, Wok and Roll to New Big Wong, and have generally had decent service and food, albeit overpriced.Initially we waited for almost ten minutes to be acknowledged by the server, at which point we ordered our drinks and food together. This would be passable if the place was really busy, but only a third of the tables had customers, if that. The food came out quickly for some, but in waves, which was strange, but I'd let it slide. What really bugged me and the rest of the group was when it came time to settle our bill; we had from the start asked for the bill to be split, and it was - into totals on Post-It notes with no indication of what exactly we were paying for. Turns out the tip was included, which took some prodding of the server to realize. This would be fine, but the tips were high, over 20% though we had no way of knowing since the receipt wasn't itemized at all.Ultimately we totaled one of the bills ourselves, and it turned out being significantly overcharged. It makes me wonder how often they pull this on customers and don't expect them to question it. We disputed it and ended up getting some of the money back after referring to the menu, but without apology and following some silly comments from other waitstaff. In short, out of the numerous Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, this one is to be avoided. The bathrooms are dirty, the food is average at best, the service is slow and inattentive, prices are inflated, and they have very strange billing policies, including over billing and adding inflated tips. Bringing out the tabs on a hand-written post-it is the final oddity that I hadn't seen before. Steer clear.

Man, was I tired! It was another burning hot Washington afternoon, and after walking around the Smithsonians all day, I decided to head up to Chinatown to grab a bite to eat. I kinda just picked a place after a brief look at its menu. Maybe I should've looked closer?I mean, the food wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. I had a pork chop soup (which turned out to be soup with pork chops on the side) and crab rangoons. The soup was pretty refreshing, with a good amount of bok choy, but the pork chops were pretty mediocre. The crab rangoons were terrible - no crab in it at all! Ugh - so cheap.I guess I'm being generous because the food wasn't bad and neither was the service - the waitress who served me put me in a window room all by myself and was good with water and taking orders with broken English (though I tried my Chinese with her too...I'm just bad with menu items because I can't read them!). Everything here was just...meh, though. The final word: There are better places in Chinatown for the same amount of money or less (or so I think).

Stay away! If there was a possibility for 1 start, I'd most definitely choose it. To begin, my childhood friend came to visit and we wanted to show him a good time. We wanted Mings (the best Chinese in DC) but they were backed up for an hour (for a reason). The staff at Chinatown Garden was extremely rude and slow. We waited a good ten minutes before someone came to us, and when they did, they just asked "what do you want to order?" I ordered the chow mein because I thought they would be crispy noodles, but when the dish came, it was a slop of old vegetables and stale crackers. I asked is this chow mein and the waitress yelled, yes YELLED!, " yeah, it's chow mein" and proceeded to throw it on the table. Needless to say the food was disgusting and tasteless. The general consensus was that the food was bland. The worst and most embarrassing part was when we were given our check we wanted to give a 12.5% tip, but the waitress began to argue with us. She yelled at my friend for daring to give such a bad tip when in honest she deserved nothing because she never once stopped to check how we were doing. We exacted revenge when a large group of about ten almost walked in. We warned them before they suffered the same fate as us.Please...stay away and make sure businesses like this don't sully DC's name.

Flaming Volcanoes! The most random drink to have at a Chinese restaurant, but also the most amazing. One of these will get two people sloshed, three if they're light drinkers. Don't ask me what's in it, and don't bother asking the waitress, she'll usually shrug. Just go with it!Chinatown Garden is a pretty nice spot. In comparisons to the hole-in-the-walls surrounding it (prices are for the most part comparable), it's one of the better options for ambiance in Chinatown. It's a multi-level establishment so there is tons of seating. They easily accommodate large groups and don't mind if you get rowdy. Which you will when you have a Flaming Volcano. The food is lacking though. Not as good as other places on the block. Their servers are difficult about splitting checks for large parties. And because the gratuity is automatic for large tables, they get lazy about the service. For those reasons Chinatown Garden can only get 3 stars. I can't imagine coming here unless I wanted to start off a night out with some fun drinks. There really is nothing else exceptional about this place.

So the food is good, and the flaming drinks are kind of amazing. This place is right in the middle of Chinatown so is fairly convenient. The outside is cute, and the decor inside is traditional cheesy Chinese. Anyways, why the low star rating? The staff.Service was fine, and the check came. We put down a 15% tip - and one of the waitresses actually looked at us and said, is that all? I'm sorry but 1) it was average service, nothing special and 2) YOU ACTUALLY SAID THAT TO THE GUESTS?!?! Seriously, get some class. The only reason this gets two stars was the fact the food was good. The wait staff should be ashamed of themselves.
